Japanese Knotweed

Swansea is considered to be one of the worst affected parts of the UK, with the total biomass of the plant estimated to exceed 62,000 tonnes within the area, according to a Commonwealth Agriculture Bureaux International report.

Japanese knotweed is an invasive species of plant and is the fastest growing in the UK. Knotweed can grow virtually anywhere and causes many problems including loss of native plant species, physical damage, rapid spread, reduction in land values and difficulty in obtaining mortgages.

Knotweed grows in virtually all habitats and soil types and its growth is not dependent on climate. In Swansea it is found on beaches, grassland, wet ground, along water courses, in gardens, derelict land, graveyards and railway embankments and hedges.

Japanese knotweed is extremely difficult to get rid of completely due to the fact that even small pieces of the plant can grow into new plants.
